Lexi Theis came through against St. Charles West in two previous at-bats during Thursday’s Holt Varsity Softball Tournament finale between two Gateway Athletic Conference North opponents.
So after the Fort Zumwalt North sophomore collected her third hit of the game and gave the Panthers the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning, Warriors coach Ellen Parker was left second-guessing herself.

Fort Zumwalt South was making its debut in the Gateway Athletic Conference North and St. Charles West kicker Mike Gesell was introduced as the new Warriors kicker in Friday night’s season opener for both teams.
Gesell grabbed the limelight and was the star of the show in West’s 16-0 shutout over the Bulldogs at Steve Stahl Stadium. The 5-foot-9, 150-pound senior kicked three field goals, had two interceptions and supported the run well from his defensive back position.

The Orchard Farm football team has been decent for the past several seasons, going 17-23 the last four years which included a 5-5 mark in 2009.
The one thing Eagles coach Phil Kendall knows for sure, though, is that his team is ready to take that next step past .500 and 2010 provides as good a chance as any for Orchard Farm.

The Orchard Farm softball team lost eight seniors and four starters to graduation last year but that doesn’t mean the Eagles expect any less of themselves in 2010.
The Eagles have fielded a competitive team in recent years and have made it to their district championship game in each of the last four seasons. They advanced to sectionals twice in that span including last season, which coach Deb Wynn calls the school’s best ever. They won 14 of their first 16 games to start the year, lost 5-3 in the Class 2 sectional round to Belle High School and finished 19-5 overall.

This is a press release review of the Lions’ PDL season, by GM James Shipley.
In its 5th Anniversary season, the St. Louis Lions of the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League showed great promise both on the pitch and in the stands in 2010. The 2005 PDL “Rookie of the Year” franchise faced a very strong, competitive Heartland Division loaded with professionals and battled to a record of five wins, seven losses and four draws.
“There was never a game that we didn’t have a solid chance of winning,” said President and Head Coach Tony Glavin. “Despite our record, the difference in almost every game came down to one or two mistakes that are going to be made by a young team.”
The Lions opened the season with losses to Real Colorado 2-0 and Des Moines 2-1, before surprising Rochester on the road with a 2-1 Lions victory. That started a strong run that included three wins against Springfield and ties against Kansas City and Des Moines. “At that point we were right in the middle of the fight for first place in the Division,” said Glavin. “We had the momentum and were ready to challenge the top teams.”
But the early promise faded under pressure from older, more experienced teams. The Lions lost two games in succession to Colorado, followed by two consecutive losses to Thunder Bay, one of the top PDL teams in 2010 and National Championship winner in 2008. Reeling from four consecutive losses, the Lions finished the season with a win in Kansas City, 5-2, a loss against Rochester 1-0, and draws against both Springfield and Des Moines.
