The Alzheimer's Association offers free support groups that meet in St. Charles, St. Peters, O'Fallon and Warrenton.
Led by a trained professional or volunteer, the support groups provide opportunities for people with Alzheimer's disease or related illnesses and their caregivers to release stress and share their struggles and solutions with others who find themselves in the same situations. Attendees can also learn more about dementia, research and help that is available.

The Conservation Department will accept applications for reservations on 12 managed wetland areas from Sept. 1 through 18. Drawing results will be available Oct. 1 at the same website.
The phone reservation system used in the past has been discontinued this year. Wildlife Division Chief DeeCee Darrow noted that the decision was based on a need to cut the agency’s budget and on the dwindling use of the telephone system.
“Maintaining a telephone reservation system made sense when it served a significant portion of waterfowl hunters and was reasonably economical,” said Darrow, “but we have reached a point where it’s no longer a good use of taxpayer dollars.”
According to Darrow, the telephone reservation system handled 27 percent of all applications in 2002. In 2009, only 4.5 percent of hunters applied by phone. This, together with the expense of maintaining the telephone reservation system, prompted the decision to discontinue the service.

Army Pfc. Joshua W. Whitmore has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training. He is the son of Joe and Deb Whitmore of Shadow Wood Court, St. Charles, Mo and is a 2008 graduate of St. Charles West High School.
During the nine weeks of basic combat training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
The Advanced Individual Training course is designed to train infantry soldiers to perform reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover anti-personnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment; operate and maintain communications equipment and radio networks; construct field firing aids for infantry weapons; and perform infantry combat exercises and dismounted battle drills, which includes survival procedures in a nuclear, biological or chemical contaminated area. |

Orchard Farm High School Principal Brian Smith will host a meeting to discuss the potential of changing the honors graduation requirements for high school students. Parents and guardians of non-seniors as well as students who are non-seniors are invited to participate in a meeting at 6:30pm September 7 in the High School commons area. Principla Smith is interested in the students' perspectives on increasing requirements.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will close westbound Route 40 at the Missouri River (Daniel Boone Bridge) for more repair work the weekends of Sept. 10-13 and Sept. 17-20, 2010.
This will impact all drivers heading from Chesterfield to St. Charles County those weekends, as well as fans heading to the Mizzou home games against McNeese State and San Diego State.
Crews will close westbound Route 40, and all access to St. Charles County from Route 40, at 8 p.m. both Friday Sept. 10 and Friday Sept. 17 and will reopen the route by 5 a.m. the following Mondays. During this closure, crews will continue to reset bearings, replace expansion joints and repair splice plates on the bridge. Access to St. Charles County using I-70, Route 364, and Route 370 will remain open.
The detour for the closure is taking I-270 to I-70. For people returning to St. Louis, however, eastbound Route 40 over the river will remain open.
"We understand how important the traditions are for home games at Mizzou," said Karen Yeomans, West St. Louis County area engineer. "There are a lot of activities in St. Charles County which draw people from St. Louis, including the wineries, bike trails and many other events. People will still be able to do these activities, but knowing about this work will help people determine which routes they need to use to get to them. To help, we'll minimize construction work on the I-270 and I-70 detour route. We will provide detour information on our overhead message boards."
The preventative maintenance work is needed to ensure that the 1930s-era Boone Bridge remains safe for the 75,000 vehicles which use it daily.

The O'Fallon Jazz Band and the O'Fallon Community Concert Band will perform a free concert from 2pm-4:30pm on Monday, Labor Day, in Civic Park in O'Fallon.
Patrons may bring picnic fare and chairs and blankets for lawn seating around the bandstand.
The O'Fallon Jazz Band will play big band, swing and jazz, including music by Les Brown, Henry Mancini, Glenn Miller and Count Basie-style arrangements.
The O'Fallon Community Concert Band's program includes "The Morning Commuter" (aka "The Labor Day Special"), "Instant Concert" (34 songs in three minutes, 10 seconds), patriotic songs and music from the movies, and "Summer in Rio," by Claude T. Smith.
