The O’Fallon City Council on Thursday voted unanimously to lower property tax and sewer insurance rates.
The council set the city’s 2010 property tax rate at 0.4838 cents per $100 assessed valuation, a decrease of about 21 percent from the 2009 rate of 0.6164 cents per $100. The owner of a $100,000 house would pay less than $92 in 2010 city property taxes, a decrease from $117.08 in 2009.

If you have always wanted to learn Spanish, Conversational Spanish 101 at St. Peters’ Community & Arts Center is the perfect class for you. This informative eight-week class will be held on Thursdays, beginning Sept. 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Learn to order at your favorite Mexican restaurant, communicate with Spanish-speaking friends, or communicate easily during a trip south of the border. This class will assist you in developing the necessary vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and conversation skills to effectively communicate in those pursuits.
Each lesson in Conversational Spanish 101 will include study guides and practice conversations to develop your skills. All materials are provided.
The fee for the class is $100 for St. Peters residents and $110 for general public. St. Peters Community & Arts Center is located at 1035 St. Peters-Howell Road.

Missouri has started using a federal database that could reduce the chance of people getting a title for a stolen vehicle.
Missouri this week began cross-checking applications for vehicle titles with information stored in the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System.

Army Pfc. Michael D. Hetlage graduated from the Field Artillery Automated Tactical Data Systems Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, OK. Hetlage is the brother of George A. Hetlage of Green Gage Road, St. Peters, Mo., and Mike J. Mobley of Portage Road, Portage Des Sioux, Mo. The private is a 2009 graduate of Fort Zumwalt South High School, St. Peters.
As members of the Army's field artillery team, the course is designed to train soldiers as specialists to operate the advanced field artillery tactical data systems for both cannon and multiple launch rocket systems. The specialists play a critical role in the safe, accurate, and lethal delivery of the field artillery's various fire support systems used to support infantry and tank units in combat. Skills training included methods of computing target locations using computers or manual calculations, ammunition handling techniques, and operating and performing maintenance on related equipment, vehicles, generators, and artillery tactical and data systems.

This year's St. Charles Night Out is tonight, September 1. The St. Charles Police and Fire Departments and your City Officials welcome and encourage you to participate in our neighborhood sponsored celebration of St. Charles Night Out. St. Charles Night Out is a yearly festival where neighbors connect with one another.
The Night Out event in New Town will feature appearances by McGruff the Crime Dog, the Balloon Guy, fire apparatus and police canine at Rue Royale at the Grand Canal. Dan Kuse & Double D will be performing 6:00pm — 8:00pm. Potluck Dinner — Bring a dish to share… hot dogs, chips, hamburgers, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, whatever treat you like!

The Student Activities Office at St. Charles Community College has organized a lunchtime entertainment series for the fall 2010 semester. The series will include performances by a variety of musicians from across the United States, as well as local performers and SCC musicians. All performances are free and open to the public.

Missouri Title Loans cannot both prohibit borrowers from taking the company to court and prevent them from banding together to pursue class arbitration, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.
The court's 4-3 ruling could have broad impact on cases involving pre-dispute, mandatory arbitration, according to consumer law experts.

Some of the state's top education leaders have kicked off a proactive initiative to guide future trends in Missouri's schools.
A group of about 120 school superintendents and school board members, dubbed the Missouri Vision Task Force, will spend about a year meeting in internal focus groups and conversing with community members before producing a blueprint for Missouri's educational future.
