Some scary moments aboard a local ferry Tuesday night, as a vehicle crashed through a gate and hit a car onboard head-on, over and over again.
The incident happened on the Brussels Ferry in Calhoun County, Illinois. Operating a ferry at night in the fog is hard enough, but police said a deck hand was nearly killed by a driver who was allegedly drunk.
Elaine Droege of Brussels, Illinois said she'll continue to ride the Brussels Ferry, but around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, as she was taking the ferry home, investigators said 19-year-old Andrew Plato of Jerseyville crashed his car onto the ferry, hitting the boat's closed metal gates, as well as Droege's jeep, as she was sitting in it.

AmerenUE wants to raise its rates by 18 percent. But before state regulators decide on the requested hike, they're taking input from the public. The Missouri Public Service Commission, the governing body that regulates utilities, must approve the increase. Ameren says it needs the money to pay for upgrades they have already made to improve reliability and to off-set the rising cost of producing electricity. An 18 percent increase works out to about $402 million per year or about $15 a month for a typical household, according to Ameren.

The state Department of Natural Resources says Boonville authorities reported the overflow Wednesday. Boonville officials believe a loose electrical connection at a station caused an electrical breaker to trip, shutting off power to the station's pumps.
